Original U.S. 40x60 poster for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical film SOUTH PACIFIC (1958), directed by Joshua Logan. James Michener wrote the original material on which this legendary Broadway show was based. The play starred Mary Martin as Nellie Forbush, the navy nurse from Arkansas, but Fox player Mitzi Gaynor was tapped for the film version. Likewise Italian tenor Ezio Pinza played the male lead on Broadway, but Italian matinee idol Rossano Brazzi was cast in the film. Other cast members include John Kerr, France Nuyen, Richard Harrison, Richard H. Cutting and the wonderful Ray Walston. Made in the 70mm process Todd AO, the film was extremely popular and ran in roadshow for over a year. This 40x60 poster is dated 1959 and is clearly meant for the the domestic 35mm release. This poster was probably used in a theater, but it was never folded. We have graded it in good, average-used condition.
