Warren Beatty's film about the journalist John Reid, who chronicled the history of the Russian Revolution in his book TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is regarded as one of the best epic films. The movie toggles seductively between faux documentary and gripping drama. A great cast supports Beatty, who plays John Reid, including Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Maureen Stapleton, Gene Hackman and other fine actors. Interviews with "witnesses" also appear in the film, underscoring the history in the film and giving context to action. This film received multiple honors including a nomination for the Best Picture Oscar. Warren Beatty won the Academy Award for Best Direction for REDS.
