Grace Metalious wrote the blockbuster novel about life and sexual mores in middle America. The success of Peyton Place is one of the biggest stories in publishing history. The novel pointed an accusatory finger at phony morality and all-too-genuine hypocrisy. Fox was not far behind with a film version that would be a handsomely mounted CinemaScope film, stunningly photographed by William C. Mellor, and featuring a great cast including Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Lee Philips, Diane Varsi, Russ Tamblyn, Terry Moore, Lorne Greene and David Nelson.
