Adapted from a novel by Robert Hichens, this is the story of a happily married London barrister (Peck) who falls in love with the accused poisoner (Valli) he is defending. This was PeckÕs second and last film for Hitchcock. Laughton gives one of his best performances as the sadistic and malevolent judge. Barrymore received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the judgeÕs intimidated and submissive wife.
