Sadistic hoodlum Liberty Valence, played wonderfully by Lee Marvin, menaces a territorial town in the days before statehood. James Stewart is a young lawyer who comes to the west to settle down and bring his lawyerly ways with him. John Wayne is a rough-hewn rancher steeped in the values of the old west. Which one of these men end the career of Liberty Valence with a bullet? This is the question on which the film pivots. Vera Miles is the woman who loves them both. Nice illustration of the two main players, but the artist is uncredited.
