Columbia Pictures Original U.S. One-Sheet Poster for the Frank Tashlin directed baseball comedy KILL THE UMPIRE (1950). The movie stars William Bendix, who was refining his comedy chops, preparing for the classic television role of Chester A. Riley in the weekly sitcom THE LIFE OF RILEY. That role went first to Jackie Gleason, but the show flopped. But William Bendix had already played Riley in the radio series beginning in 1943, so later it was revived for TV, this time with Bendix in the title role and was a huge success, running until 1958. And before KILL THE UMPIRE, Bendix had already played Babe Ruth in the film THE BABE RUTH STORY, so he slipped into the baseball universe easily. The movie also stars Una Merkel, Ray Collins, Bill Phillips, Jean Willes, William Frawley, Tommy Ivo and Tom D'Andrea.
