MGM Original Italian 79x55 poster for the epic western movie HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962). The movie was a co-production of MGM and Cinerama, Inc. The movie would certainly qualify as an "event" movie in the United States in 1962. Presented on the giant deep curved screen, the film follows one family over a generation. The story of the family is presented as a story of the westward expasion from 1840 or so to 1880. Three directors were signed to direct different parts of the film - Henry Hathaway, George Marshall and John Ford. The stellar cast includes James Stewart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark, Karl Malden, Debbie Reynolds, Carolyn Jones, Gregory Peck, Walter Brennan, Robert Preston and Raymond Massey. And others! The movie is more of an entertainment than anything else, with a great score, impressive photography and a lot of action. But its story of western settlement reflects the mythos of the Old West more than the gritty reality it was. The film opened in Italy on New Year's Eve of 1963, and we are fairly sure that while the poster mentions Cinerama, the movie was presented in Italy in 35mm.
