The film stars Robert Redford as Waldo Pepper, "the second greatest flyer in the world." The film also stars Susan Sarandon, Bo Svenson, Margot Kidder and Geoffrey Lewis. The movie tells the story of a World War I era pilot, who, frustrated because he did not get to fly combat during the war, assumers an aviation daredevil lifestyle after it. The film enjoys a great reputation among aviation movie lovers because of the authenticity of the planes involved and some spectacular cinematography by Robert Surtees. While the film made respectable money, it was not the mega-hit that Hill's previous outing with Redford (and Paul Newman), BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. While mostly intended as a drama, the tone of the film is sometimes comic in a way that's a bit too slapstick for real drama.
