This excellent drama is the story of Bobby Dupea (Nicholson), who has given up his well-bred family and a promising career as a concert pianist to go on the road. He finally settles in a small town as an oil rigger with his dimwitted girlfriend Rayette (Black). The film title refers to a book of piano lessons for beginners. Though the entire cast is uniformly excellent, Nicholson emerges as a fully formed and mature actor.
