Original U.S. Three-Sheet Poster (41x81) Linen-Backed Fine Plus Condition

Universal Pictures Original U.S. Three Sheet for the Lambert Hillyer directed classic horror film DRACULA'S DAUGHTER (1936). The film stars Otto Kruger, Gloria Holden, Marguerite Churchill, Irving Pichel, Edward Van Sloan and Hedda Hopper. The poster is linen-backed and in fine plus condition. The linen-backing is quite good, but the linen lip has been trimmed close to the poster's edge (about 1/4 inch). The posters for classic horror films have long been the predominant collectibles among cinephiles. Of course other genres, such as gangster, animation and film noir are popular too, but itÕs been established that the posters for science-fiction and horror films are the most in-demand by the public and can command huge prices when key titles become available. Within this genre, the posters for the 1930s Universal horror films featuring The Mummy, Frankenstein and Dracula are always the most sought after. But also of keen interest is DRACULA'S DAUGHTER (1936). This was the last of the original Universal horror films created under the aegis of Carl Laemmle, the man responsible for producing movies like THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925), FRANKENSTEIN (1931), THE MUMMY (1932), MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932), and of course, DRACULA (1931.) After the stunning successes of these horror films, and one sequel (THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN in 1935), Laemmle knew that the public was ripe for a sequel to their original shocker DRACULA. And so, production began with Edward Van Sloan reprising his role of Van Helsing, the vampire hunter and man responsible for DraculaÕs demise. But with the vampire-in-chief dead, the studio needed a worthy replacement and she came in the form of Dracula's daughter, the Countess Marya Zaleska. Her only wish is to be rid of the curse of being a vampire and so she enlists the aid of a psychiatrist to help her. When her effort fails, she succumbs to her desire for blood. So she kidnaps the psychiatrist's fetching female assistant and takes her to Transylvania, where she hopes to lure the psychiatrist into her trap. All of this has an undertone of lesbian desire, unusual for the time. The posters designed for Universal's films in the thirties were among the best ever created for motion pictures. Those created during the years 1935-1936 are particularly outstanding. Few would argue that there are better posters than those for the Universal horror films, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935), and DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. The overwhelming impression one gets when looking at any of the posters from DRACULA'S DAUGHTER is clear. The posters are dark and impose a sense of foreboding mystery and romantic menace, making them particularly striking. This example of the large format three sheet is the only copy known to exist. The last time it came onto the market was in 2010 when it was sold in a major auction. Now, for the first time in fourteen years, this impressive and important poster is available. Prior to restoration, it had minor wear to the upper border, a small chip in the left edge and a small tear in the lower left background. There was minor wear to the fold lines, and there is some skillful minimalist color touchups. The conservation of the poster is quite good. MovieArt Original Film Posters in Austin, Texas guarantees that this poster is authentic.
