Original U.S. Six Sheet Poster (82x82) for the S.A. Lynch Enterprises western film THE DESERT MAN (1917) directed by and starring William S. Hart. Hart was easily one of the first superstars of the American cinema. He was a western star, but not cut from the cloth of the action-packed shoot-em-up mold of Tom Mix or Harry Carey. Rather he was deliberate, nuanced, low-key. Hart was determined to portray the Old West accurately as he saw it, and he was successful in this style in picture after picture. Hart learned his craft on the New York stage and he had been in many Broadway plays. Indeed he was past forty when he first appeared as a western player in films. Also appearing in the film with him were Margery Wilson, Buster Irving, Henry Belmar, Milton Ross, Jack Livingston, Walt Whitman and Josephine Headley. The poster is an absolutely amazing stone lithograph. This poster is folded, and has been kept folded for a century. For its age and in general we have graded it in fine condition.
