Adapted from a story by James Joyce, the film unfolds at a party on Epiphany Party in Dublin in 1904. It is snowing outside, but inside the home of the two sisters hosting this gathering there is dining and dancing. The screenplay was written by Tony Huston, and he brings to life the guests at this gathering a gallery of characters for the camera to adore. Angelica Huston plays Gretta Conroy. She is married to an academic played by Donal McCann. In the course of the evening, she is brought suddenly to remember the fate of a deceased lover. It is a profoundly emotional moment, and a fitting swan song for John Huston. The U.S. one-sheet is probably the most beautiful poster of any John Huston film.
