Original U.S. Six-Sheet Poster (81x81) Linen-Backed Very Fine Condition
Warner Bros Original U.S. Six Sheet poster for the Edmund Goulding directed drama DARK VICTORY (1939). A superb portrait of Bette Davis. The film also stars George Brent and Humphrey Bogart. Davis plays a socialite, Judith Traherne, living on Long Island, interested mostly in horses and the social whirl. Bogart is the stable hand who takes care of the horses on her estate. When she begins to suffer from debilitating headaches and dizziness, she at first dismisses the problem, but an onset of serious illness turns her world upside down. George Brent is her physician. What might be nothing more than another soap, is instead turned into a three hankie near-masterpiece. Bette Davis was nominated for the Oscar as Best Actress, but lost to Vivien Leigh for her performance in GONE WITH THE WIND. The poster announces Davis as an Academy Award Winner, referring to her past awards for JEZEBEL (1938) and DANGEROUS (1935). The film itself was nominated for two other Oscars, as Best Picture and Best Musical Score (Max Steiner), but won neither. It is no exaggeration to say that the campaign for DARK VICTORY yielded the very best Bette Davis image on an American Poster. JEZEBEL is close, but I think this is even better. Six-sheet poster are large format posters which are comprised of separate panels that overlap. The example we offer is linen-backed and is in very fine condition. MovieArt Original Film Posters in Austin, Texas guarantees this poster to be authentic.
