Original Warner Bros Japanese 21x29 Poster, folded, for the Otto Preminger directed drama THE COURT MARTIAL OF BILLY MITCHELL (1956). The film stars Gary Cooper, Rod Steiger, Charles Bickford, Elizabeth Montgomery, Fred Clark and Ralph Bellamy. The famous military trial was inevitable subject matter for a film, and it was Preminger who felt that it's time had come in the mid-fifties, shortly after the first deflation of McCarthyism. Cooper plays the Brigadier-General William L. Mitchell, the defendant in one of the most blatantly political trials in the history of the U.S. Military. Mitchell, who pushed the military establishment to adopt air-power after World War I, was fiercely opposed by some and was court-martialed for insubordination. He is generally considered the father of the U.S. Air Force today. A great role for the stoic Cooper, perhaps the perfect template for an American Hero.
