The film concerns the early life of Christiane Felscherinow, who as young teen became addicted to heroin. A page in wikipedia states "Based on the 1978 non-fiction book Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (We Children from Zoo Station), transcribed and edited from tape recordings by Kai Hermann and Horst Rieck, the film immediately acquired cult status and features David Bowie as both composer and as himself." The film was based upon the book, and the role of Christiane was played by Natja Brunckhorst. Felscherinow published a second book in 2013 which offered a different perspective on her story.
