The film version was adapted from a 1975 musical choreographed and directed by Bob Fosse, which opened at the 46th Street Theater on May 12,1975 and ran for 936 performances. This musical was itself an adaptation of a 1926 non-musical play. The story takes place in Chicago in the 1920s and features Velma (Zeta-Jones), a chanteuse and tease who killed her husband and her sister after finding them in bed together. The other main character is Roxie (Zellweger), who killed her boyfriend when she discovered that he wasn't going to make her a star. The two find themselves on death row together and must fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and won 6 - including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress to Zeta-Jones.
