Minverva Film Original Italian Four-Foglio Poster (79x55), linen-backed, for the Julien Duvivier version of ANNA KARENINA (1948), starring Vivien Leigh, Sir Ralph Richardson, Kieron Moore, Hugh Dempster, Michael Gough, Martita Hunt and Jeremy Spencer. This was the second major sound version of the Leo Tolstoy novel of adultery, obsession and love. The first had starred Garbo, and it must have given pause to the producers as to how they could improve upon the august MGM film of 1935. But this film holds its own with the other version. If anything, Vivien Leigh is a bit more accessible and the improvements in technique create a bit of a better flow for the movie. Vivien Leigh is ravishing as Anna, and her own personality infuses the character with life. Leigh suffered from bi-polar disorder and she brings to Anna a sense of desperation and desire that is at the heart of the story. The film is populated by a wonderful British cast and is respectfully treated by Duvivier. The art on this Italian four-foglio is by Ercole Brini, and it is stunning.
